Balcony players

The Balcony Players are an energetic Gypsy/Klezmer band that takes pride in making people happy and dance with their music. The international group includes members from the Netherlands, Belgium, Peru and New Orleans USA. Their music combines these different cultures with a mix of traditional Gypsy and Jewish music creating a rich and colorful sound perfect for dancing.
The band in its current state consists of five members, those being:
Moniek de Leeuw (Violin, voice), Johan de Pue (Guitar, voice), Ilse Roskam (Accordion, voice), Martin Masakowski (Double Bass, voice), and Luca Susti (Drums, voice).

Currently (beginning in August 2011) the Balcony Players are on a year-long musical tour through Europe and America in their ‘1983’ Ford-Ambulance. While in Europe, their focus is on the Balkan Countries in order to learn more about the lifestyle and music of the gypsies in the most authentic way possible. The Balcony’s make a living from playing on the streets and in the local venues of all the cities they pass. In this way they can support their whole journey and share their music with many people around the world!
In September 2011 they had a great experience meeting the famous Hungarian Gypsy band Romano Drom. They performed together in Gӧdӧr Club in Budapest. In October 2011 they visited several gypsy villages in Romania to give concerts, connect with the people and play for the gypsy children.
The Balcony Players started by jamming at the Balcony in May 2009. (thus the name,
‘The Balcony Players’). Since then the Balcony players have played at many stages and festivals in Holland, Belgium and even in Scotland! In August 2010 they toured around Europe living like traveling-gypsy’s, playing on the streets, in the woods, at clubs and on balcony’s. Here they made the contacts that helped start the current world-tour.

Their new CD, Balcony Go Crazy, released in October 2010, contains an equal mix of original compositions and traditional music from the Balkan (gypsy and klezmer music) as well as influences from the North-East of Brazil. After completing their all acoustic recording,
they found a green way to produce and promote the record, using a CD cover made from completely recycled material! For every hardcopy CD sold, one three is planted in Mozambique (Africa), in collaboration with the Dutch good purpose organization Oxfam Novib.
